1- Choose a dance style/type – What would you like to dance?
Egyptian (Saidi, Baladi, Shaabi, Nubian, Zaar, Drum solo, etc), Turkish, Lebanese, Moroccan, Iraqi, Tribal Fusion, Tribal Bedouin, ATS, etc
2- Choose a song – How would you like to dance?
Fast, slow, classical, orchestral, pop, etc.
3- Learn the chosen song by heart
Start by listening to the song a few times. Focus your attention to it. Try to identify the instruments and emotions. What do you feel?
4- Study the song structure and divide it into parts
After you have listened to the song several times you will realise there are some repetitions, some repetitions with a few alterations, some similarities. You will notice that the song is divided into parts. Write down the song structure. To understand more about musical structure please read Hossam Ramzy’s article Drumming for Dancers.
5- Dance to the song
Play the song and and play with it. Try different moves and steps. Try those steps you thought of whilst analysing the song. Feel free to try anything different. Film all the dancing if you can as you may forget a step or a move you liked. Also you can see how it all looks and make slight alterations as required.
6- Start making the choreography for each part of the song
Repeat step 5 and don’t forget to make the transition between parts in order to make the choreography fluid.
7- Film the whole choreography and change what is necessary.
